The Story of "Prickly Pear's Last Bloom"It's not unusual to find a cactus out in the desert that is dying yet still manages to spend it's last bit of energy on a bloom. I find that fascinating to explore through painting.
There are several different kinds of prickly pears. We used to have a neighbor that grew them to eat - nopalitos. They made a beautiful hedge in a garden but out in the wild Arizona deserts they can look pretty scraggily. Sometimes the flesh of the cactus hardly looks alive. But they can still have amazingly bright and glowing blossoms. Usually in June, the delicate yellow flowers start showing the orange/red colors. |
