The Story of "New Leaf"

"New Leaf" is big!

​I love painting big. Especially if I'm painting something that's little. That whole dynamic causes me to thoroughly see what I'm painting in a new way. With new respect. New appreciation.

When I was in college I majored in Chemistry.  I'm fascinated by how living things are made on a cellular level. I've even taken some online MIT BioChemistry classes just to stir up my wonder. I incorporate what I know to be the working function of plants and flowers into my paintings, even if it's just a subtle nod to the unseen mechanisms. 

The coolest part about the plant I used from my garden for this painting is that so many of the structures for moving nutrients can be readily seen by human eyes. I loved expressing them with my paint while meditating on the wonder of life.
